Tip: After swimming, take a ride on a pletna!
After refreshing yourself in the lake, treat yourself to a pletna boat ride to the island or take a walk to the nearby Vintgar Gorge – the nature around Bled offers endless possibilities for an active holiday.
The Bled Pletna Is Not Just a Transport to the Island – It’s an Experience That Takes You Back in Time, Into the Silence of Lake Waves, Embraced by Nature and History.
It is a traditional wooden boat with a canvas roof, unique exclusively to Lake Bled and its island. The history of the pletna dates back to the 16th century, and the boat has become one of the most recognizable symbols of Bled.
What Makes the Pletna Unique?
The Bled pletna is handmade and has a unique shape you won’t find anywhere else in the world. It is crafted only by local masters, and its operation is exclusively in the hands of the "pletnarji" – special boatmen who often pass this craft down through generations.
The ride is completely silent, as the pletna is powered by human strength – the boatman stands at the rear of the boat and propels it toward the island using two oars in a special technique called “standing rowing.” This method provides a calm, almost meditative experience that respects nature and cultural heritage.
What Awaits You on Bled Island?
After about a 15-minute gentle ride across the lake, the pletna docks at the stone pier on the island. Here, you are greeted by the famous 99 stone steps leading to the top of the island and the Church of the Assumption of Mary.
On the island, you can explore:
A Baroque church from the 17th century, with preserved frescoes and rich history.
The famous "wishing bell" – if you ring it and make a wish in your mind, it is said to come true.
Archaeological remains, as the island was settled already in prehistoric times.
A small museum and a shop where you can learn more about the island’s history.
A charming café with views of the lake and surrounding hills.
Why Do Newlyweds Carry the Bride Up the Steps?
One of the most popular romantic traditions in Bled is that the groom carries the bride up all 99 steps to the top of the island during the wedding – without stopping. If he succeeds, their marriage is said to last long and be happy. This custom is so beloved that hundreds of weddings take place on the island every year, many with international couples eager to experience something unique.
An Experience That Stays in Your Memory
Visiting the island by pletna is not just a tourist attraction – it is an experience that combines natural beauty, cultural heritage, and each visitor’s personal story. The sound of water, the silence during the ride, and the mysterious whisper of centuries carried by the church make this experience special and unforgettable.
