Vintgar gorge

Blejski Vintgar, also often called the Vintgar Gorge, is one of Slovenia’s most stunning natural attractions. It is located near Bled, between the villages of Podhom and Spodnje Gorje, just about 4 km from Lake Bled and Apartments Tavčar.

What is Vintgar?
It is a 1.6 km long gorge carved by the Radovna River, flowing between the hills Hom and Boršt. Over millennia, the river has created a deep valley with steep vertical walls and many natural wonders: rapids, pools, waterfalls, and whirlpools. The most spectacular is the Šum waterfall, which, at 33 meters, is the highest river waterfall in Slovenia.

What to experience during your visit?
The trail through Vintgar runs along wooden bridges and galleries, some attached directly to the rocky cliffs above the river. The walk is safe and suitable for families with children. Along the way, you will enjoy the sound of rushing water, fresh mountain air, and countless opportunities for beautiful photos.

A brief historical insight
The gorge was discovered in 1891 and opened to visitors in 1893, making it one of Slovenia’s first touristically developed natural landmarks. The name “Vintgar” likely comes from the German word Weingarten (vineyard), although there are no vineyards nearby — the name has survived from times of German influence.

• Trail length: 1.6 km one way (loop trail or return on the same path possible)

• Walking time: approx. 45 minutes to 1 hour one way

• Open: from spring to autumn (weather dependent)

• Entrance fee: yes (adults, children, family tickets)
